Connect Way of Learning to ChatGPT using MCP
Way of Learning includes an MCP connector to work with content in your own account from ChatGPT: list profiles and subjects, prepare questions and organise question banks. Actual availability depends on the production server being enabled and your ChatGPT account being eligible for custom MCP connections.
Open Way of LearningWhat you can do in ChatGPT
- View profiles, subjects and materials accessible to your account.
- Create and rename subjects, and save questions within a specified subject and category.
- Read, edit and organise existing questions, with checks to prevent overwriting newer edits.
- Optionally skip exact duplicates within the same subject and category when creating questions.
This is not an automatic import of an entire .wolbank file, PDF or image question bank. It does not detect semantically similar questions. Review generated questions and check important answers against your own sources.
Before connecting
- Have your own Way of Learning account and confirm you can sign in.
- Use ChatGPT on the web, with a plan and workspace permissions that allow custom MCP server connections. Controls and labels may vary.
- Confirm that the MCP service is enabled for your account. An unavailable endpoint or failed discovery can indicate that production access is not yet active.
An OpenAI or Gemini API key is not needed for the MCP connection. The AI provider setting inside the web app is a separate feature.
Connect in ChatGPT, step by step
- Open ChatGPT → Plugins in a browser.
- Select + and Add custom MCP server (wording may vary).
- Name it Way of Learning and enter https://wayoflearning.es/mcp as the server URL. Do not use the testing domain.
- Choose OAuth if authentication is requested and follow the authorisation prompts; never paste tokens or passwords into a chat.
- Sign in at wayoflearning.es, review the requested read/write permissions and grant consent only if appropriate.
- Acknowledge ChatGPT’s security warning, create the plugin and review the discovered tools. Select the plugin in a conversation or mention @Way of Learning if supported.
The service uses OAuth with PKCE and is scoped to the authorised account. Custom server creation may not be available on all accounts. See OpenAI’s current setup instructions.
First checks
- Start with read-only access: “Using Way of Learning, list my profiles and subjects. Do not change anything.”
- Select your own subject: “Show me its categories and question banks; suggest where nervous system questions should go.”
- Review the proposed content, then ask: “Create five test questions under Neuroanatomy in my Anatomy subject; skip exact duplicates.”
- Verify the account, category and questions inside Way of Learning before trying larger batches.
Specify the destination clearly and check the answers and explanations before studying from a new bank.
Permissions and revocation
The connector uses separate read and write scopes (wol:read and wol:write). Write access can create or change content. Only authorise domains and services you trust.
To review or revoke consent, sign in to the same account at Way of Learning connection management. You can also remove the plugin from ChatGPT settings. Never disclose authorisation codes, tokens or API credentials in a chat.
Troubleshooting
- No option to add MCP: check your plan, workspace permissions and that you are using ChatGPT web.
- 404, discovery error or service unavailable: the production endpoint may not be enabled yet; do not connect real study data to a test server.
- Sign-in fails: log in with the correct account on the same browser and domain; sessions in another browser or webview may not be shared.
- Your subjects are missing: check which account and profile were authorised.
- An edit was rejected: re-read the question before trying again, because its version may have changed.
If the issue persists, contact support without sharing passwords or tokens.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need an API key to connect ChatGPT?
No. The MCP connection uses OAuth. AI provider API keys in the web app are a separate feature.
Can I import entire .wolbank files or images via MCP?
Not currently. The connector manages questions and subjects; it does not import full .wolbank files or edit PDF and image content.
Can I revoke access later?
Yes. Use Way of Learning connection management and remove the ChatGPT plugin if needed.
