Methods you can put into practice

How to turn your notes into questions that actually test you

The first step is not to ask for a hundred questions. It is to decide what you should be able to explain when you finish studying the topic. That objective lets you judge whether a question adds value.

1. Map what is included

List the assessable sections and an action for each: define, compare, order, identify or apply. If the topic has four objectives, do not let half the bank focus on the first paragraph simply because it is easiest to turn into questions.

For a topic on membranes, for example, you could separate structure, transport, gradients and applications. The number of questions per section should reflect its syllabus weight and your difficulties, not how many lines it takes up.

2. Write the answer before the distractors

Write what you would consider a correct answer and locate its supporting passage in your notes. Then create a question that asks for it clearly. If you cannot identify a source, you may be testing an inference the material does not explain.

Add incorrect options that represent specific errors: reversing a relationship, confusing two concepts or applying a rule outside its conditions. Do not use absurd alternatives as filler.

3. Check whether someone could answer without knowing the topic

Cover the correct answer and read the options. Does the longest one always look correct? Does a word from the question appear in only one option? Does grammar rule out the others? These clues can increase your score without improving understanding.

If two options are defensible, clarify the context or recognise that it is a multiple-answer question. Do not preserve ambiguity merely because the AI marked one option.

4. Try a small batch and improve the bank

Answer without looking anything up and explain your choice. If an error comes from poor wording, fix the question. If it reveals a knowledge gap, revisit the relevant section and schedule another check.

In WayOfLearning you can generate questions from documents or build a manual bank. The first workflow requires setting up your AI provider. The quality check is the same for both: a few well-distributed questions provide more information than many repetitive ones.
