Methods you can put into practice

How to review notes without rereading them all

Rereading the entire document seems a safe way to miss nothing, but makes it harder to distinguish what you know from what merely feels familiar. Start your review with a check.

Use the contents as a question list

Turn each section into a task. “Types of transport” can become “How would I compare them, and what example would I give of each?” Close the document and try answering. You do not need to write a full exam to introduce retrieval.

If the contents are too general, use the learning objectives. The purpose is to cover the topic with manageable questions, not replace a hundred pages of notes with a hundred endless questions.

Try a blank sheet

Write the concepts and relationships you remember from a block. Mark connections you cannot justify. Then compare with the source using another colour or a separate column: this distinguishes your initial recall from what you just added.

The drawing does not need to look neat to be useful. An incomplete structure can reveal a gap that becomes invisible when you look at an already-finished diagram.

Reread to resolve a specific uncertainty

Return to the section that addresses the mistake and verify the correction. If you confused two mechanisms, prepare a brief comparison; if you forgot a condition, add it to your question. Then try explaining it again.

A broad comprehension problem may require rereading an entire section. The difference is that now you know what you are looking for and what you should be able to explain afterwards.

Keep a useful review list

Record concepts, not just question numbers: “distinguish A from B” is more reusable than “repeat question 14”. Include mistakes and uncertain correct answers, and check some mastered content after a few days.

In WayOfLearning you can use mistake practice and history. Alternate old questions with new wording so familiarity with the bank is not mistaken for mastery of the topic. Schedule your next review according to your results.
